Digital Media use guidance for families
As technology becomes an integral part of education, many schools are incorporating digital tools into their classrooms, even for young learners. While this opens up exciting opportunities for creativity and learning, it’s important to ensure that technology is used in a balanced and healthy way.
Younger than 2 years old
– Young children develop when they explore the physical world around them. Their minds learn best when they interact and play with others including parents, siblings, caregivers, and other children.
– Media use should be very limited and only when an adult is standing by.
– Avoid solo media use.
2 to 5 years of age
– Limit screen use to no more than 1 hour per day.
– Find other activities for your children to do that are healthy for their bodies and minds.
– Choose media that is interactive, nonviolent, educational, and pro-social.
– Co-view or co-play with your children
The research on the effect of digital media on brain development remains inconclusive and somewhat contradictory and further studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to understand the impact of technology and social media on brain development. In this post, we’ll share some helpful guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Healthy digital media use for the whole family
– Do not feel pressurized to start using digital media or technology early (as children can learn the use of devices very quickly)
– Place consistent limits on media type and hours of use for every member of the household
– Stop devices 1 hour before bedtime
– Decide on media-free, unplugged locations at home e.g. bedrooms
– Make time for media -free family time such as meals, games and sports as often as possible
– Talk to older children about online safety, age restrictions and passwords
– Reach out to your paediatrician if you have any concerns about your child’s development
